The Peoples’ Community Grocery project started in 2023 aims to establish a grocery store in East Austin to improve accessibility and provide a walkable establishment for the East Austin community. Funded by the city of Austin with an allocated $500,000 and in collaboration with organizations like Go Austin Vamos Austin (GAVA), community organizing and outreach is central to this project to best design what the grocery will look like. This project is currently in a feasibility pilot phase and will continue through to the end of 2024.
The People's’ Community Grocery addresses a very important issue that communities may face- one of trouble accessing establishments for your home essentials. Having a grocery store that members of the East Austin community can more easily access mitigates transportation issues.
